What is a used car warranty?
A used car warranty is insurance you take out that covers you in the event of electrical and/or mechanical failure of your vehicle. A used car warranty is usually taken out when a car has come to the end of its original new car warranty.
Is a used car warranty worth it?
When you consider the cost of taking out a used car warranty compared to paying for repairs upfront, it’s definitely worth it. Consider the cover you take out for similar expenses such as home insurance. For most, a car is one of the most expensive purchases you’ll make.
Consider the popular Ford Focus - A MotorEasy used car warranty might cost about £35 a month (less than a Ford warranty). A gearbox failure could cost you several hundred or thousand pounds to fix. Not only does a used car warranty give you get peace of mind – you can also save a lot of money!

Which factors determine used car warranty costs?
These are the key factors that determine to how likely your car is to suffer a failure and, as a result, how much you would need for repairs:
- Price - The more expensive your car – the more it costs to repair
- Age - The older your car – the more chance there is of a breakdown
- Mileage - The more miles your car has done, the greater the risk of failure
- Cover Level - The more comprehensive the cover - the more it will cost you
When do I need a used car warranty?
A used car warranty is needed when your standard new car warranty expires. For the majority of cars, that happens when your car is 3-years old (from the date of first registration).
However, there are some car manufacturers that do offer you a longer warranty:
5-year car warranty:
- Hyundai
- Renault
- Mitsubishi
- Isuzu
7-year car warranty:
Kia
MG
Ssangyong
10-year car warranty*:
Toyota
Lexus
*Each Toyota/Lexus purchased after June 2021 comes with a standard 3-year warranty. However, If you have your servicing carried out at a Toyota/Lexus main dealer they will give you a 12-month extended warranty. This offer lasts until your car is 10 years old or reaches 100,000 miles (whichever is sooner). It’s worth noting that you’re buying an extended warranty, not getting a longer new car warranty.

What is the duration of a used car warranty?
A MotorEasy used car warranty can be up to 3 years in length. You get the choice between coverage that lasts 1, 2 or 3 years.
A typical manufacturer used car warranty will last for 12 months at a time and will need to be renewed after each 12-month period. There are some who will allow you to cover for two years at a time, but none will offer you the 36 months of cover that MotorEasy offers.
What is the car age limit for a used car warranty?
MotorEasy used car warranties cover cars up to 12 years old or 120,000 miles. Most typical manufacturer warranties will only cover your vehicle for up to 10 years and 100,000 miles.
What are the requirements for a used car warranty?
Most manufacturers will expect you to have a full main dealer service history before they will offer you a used car warranty. They don’t want to offer cover on a car that’s been wilfully neglected for a couple of years as that’s when things are most likely to go wrong.
At the very least, you will need to have had your car serviced at an authorised repairer in the last 12 months. The same applies to a MotorEasy extended warranty.
Are there different levels of cover for used cars?
Yes. MotorEasy offers 3 different types of cover for your used car. Manufacturers also usually offer more than one level of cover. Like with any form of insurance, the more cover you want, the higher the cost is going to be.
With a MotorEasy used car warranty, you get more cover for less. You can also have cover for as long or as little as you like with three levels of used car warranty cover available:
- 1-3 years cover
- Pay monthly cover
- Lite plan – covers the essentials

- Buy an extended warranty from your car manufacturer

Discover all the benefits of a warranty extension with MotorEasy.
Is there a cap on the cost of repairs?
Yes, but it’s generous – up to the value of your car. For example: if your car value is £3,000, that’s the highest repair bill we will pay.
Which is the best used car warranty from a manufacturer?
If you’re looking for a used car warranty by your car’s manufacturer, Toyota offer a good deal on their cars. They will give you a ‘free’ warranty every year, for 12 months. As long as you have your car serviced at a Toyota dealer every 12 months.
Most of us stop using main dealers once the new car warranty period is over. We stop doing it because the value perception isn’t there. We know we can use other garages that don’t charge anything like as much for a standard car service.
It’s only Toyota though that will give you the free 12 month used car warranty if you pay their servicing costs. Most other car makers will sell you a used car warranty for 12 months, and you’ll still be expected to use the main dealer for your servicing.
We can provide you with MotorEasy extended warranty cover as long as your car has fewer than 120,000 miles on the clock.
You’ll not only get the peace of mind that comes with our extensive warranty cover, but these additional benefits:
- A free digital logbook in your MotorEasy account with useful date reminders (such as service and MOT dates) and access to special MotorEasy discounts
- Our monitored repair process tracks your progress and ensures work is completed to our agreed high standard
- You're never out of pocket - We pay network garages directly

Do used car dealers have to give a warranty?
No, they don’t have to give a warranty. Most will, especially on relatively new cars. If you’re buying a car for a few hundred pounds, you’re less likely to be given a warranty than if you’re buying one for a few thousand pounds.
Even if you’re not offered a warranty, it doesn’t mean you don’t have protection. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 effectively gives you protection if you’re a private individual buying a used car from a dealer. The act states that any car you purchase (new OR used) “must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described”
This means the car should do what you think the car will do. It should be reliable, roadworthy (have an MOT where necessary) and be usable. Your rights depend on how long the car has been in your ownership:
0-30 days
If your car develops an issue within the first 30 days you are free to return the car for a full refund because of the statutory warranty cover provided by the Consumer Rights Act.
31 days - 6 months
The act also gives you cover between 30 days and 6 months that says you can go back to the dealer and ask for a refund. In this instance, the law assumes the fault was pre-existing. Burden of proof is on the dealer if they argue it wasn’t. At this point, you are legally obliged to give the dealer 1 opportunity to fix the car. If they can’t, you can ask for a refund, but the dealer is allowed to offer a part refund covering the amount of time the car was in use (for depreciation).
Month 6 +
After 6 months, your rights under the Consumer Rights Act expire. If you want to make a claim against the dealer after the first 6 months, the burden of proof is now on you as the buyer, to prove the fault was there when you bought the car.
If you end up going to court - be sensible. If your used car has 75,000 miles on the clock you’ll be given less leeway by a judge than a newer car with fewer miles on the clock.
To save yourself the hassle, buy a used car warranty from MotorEasy.
You can get cover for up to 3 years and 120,000 miles and not have to worry about refunds and court dates. Like everything we do - we’ve made it nice and easy. Just pop in your registration number and fill in a few details on the MotorEasy used car warranty page
Do used cars have warranty?
If your car came from a main dealer, under an approved used scheme, you’ll most likely have been given a 12-month warranty. If your car came from a used car dealer, you’ll most likely have received a warranty between 6 & 12 months in length.
If you want to protect your investment for longer, and against more scenarios, you can get the cover you need with a MotorEasy used car warranty.

How long should a warranty be on a used car?
You should expect at least a 12 month warranty with any used car you purchase. Most reputable dealers will offer you that, although they don’t have to.
At MotorEasy we think you should be able to get a warranty on your used car that lasts for 3 years. So we do exactly that. If your car is less than 12 years old, and has fewer than 120,000 miles on it, we’ll provide cover for the next 3 years (or, until your car reaches those milestones).
You’ll also get these additional benefits to make car ownership easier:

● Access our network of 10,000 garages nationwide

What’s the difference between an extended warranty and a used car warranty?
The biggest difference is when you buy the warranty, and who from. Typically, an extended warranty is bought at the time of purchase of the vehicle. It is offered as an ‘additional extra’ by the dealer selling you the car to ‘extend’ your new car warranty.
Your car may come with a 3 year warranty as standard (new car warranty) and the dealer may ask if you want to pay more to extend the life of that warranty for another 1 or 2 years. Occasionally you’ll get a message from the manufacturer offering you a warranty extension as the end of your original new car warranty approaches.
In these two scenarios, you are extending your new car warranty - before your original warranty has run out.
Which manufacturers can I get a used car warranty for?
Anything from Alfa Romeo to Volvo - MotorEasy supplies a used car warranty for all of the major brands.
