Which New Car Should I Buy?
The inevitable rise of the Sports Utility Vehicle continues with the brand new Skoda Kamiq and the Mitsubishi Outlander. However this trend is countered just a bit by the upgrading of a reliable old favourite in the shape of a more handy sized hatchback, better known as the Volkswagen Golf. Welcome to the confounding world of the latest new models this month.
The Baby Skoda SUV
Just when you thought there wasn’t room for any more SUVs, the Skoda Kamiq comes along. Indeed, there are now a handful of Sports Utilities in the Skoda lineup and just in case you wondered, the Kamiq is the baby one. So instead of the large Kodiaq and Karoq, this is the smaller and sportier model.
Prices start at £17,700 and that Kamiq S comes complete with fancy alloy wheels, powerful LED headlights and tail lights, air conditioning, plus an infotainment system with DAB and a 6.5-inch touchscreen display. Upgrade to an SE model and get rear parking sensors, cruise control plus light and rain sensors.
It’s a nice package and will certainly be in demand as a used prospect in a few years time. Yes, there are so many SUVs to choose from, but it should be very good value by then.

The Hybrid Mitsubishi
The more acceptable face of SUV motoring is exemplified by the latest Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV range. Powered by the most advanced plug-in hybrid system on the market, equipped with two electric motors providing full-time four-wheel drive regardless of driving mode. It has an electric only range of 28 miles, but with minimal CO2 emissions of just 46g/km and a fuel economy figure of 139.7mpg it is cheap to run.
The Mitsubishi Outlander starts at £35,455 and for that you can get a Verve trim that offers many luxury features including DAB radio, heated front seats and a programmable climate control system which can warm or cool the car in advance of a journey.
These Hybrid SUVs may be the only way forward into City Centres and some towns in a few years time, making a used Outlander extremely desirable. The badge may not be special, but at least this helps drive down the asking price.

The Best Hatchback: Volkswagen Golf
Finally, the Volkswagen Golf is still in circulation and arguably better than ever. Certainly it has more kit as standard as its Volkswagen’s best selling model. Because of this it gets some new trim levels the Match Edition, GT Edition and R-Line Edition. They come with lots more kit and the winter pack would be very useful. Headlight washers, heated windscreen washer jets and a low washer-fluid warning light which, combined with LED headlights, optimise visibility at all times – especially during winter months when road grime can obscure a driver’s view. The match Edition starts at £22,135 for a 1.0 115.
The Volkswagen Golf remains the best straight hatchback buy which will hold it value strongly and always be easy to sell. Never mind the new SUVs it is the Golf we would buy, use and actually enjoy.
